Litter Free Coast and Sea Somerset
In 2016, the Severn Estuary Partnership launched the Litter Free Coast & Sea Somerset (LFCSS) project, with funding from Wessex Water. The aim of the project was to work with communities across Somerset to protect bathing water quality and reduce beach and marine litter.
Initial work focused on Burnham-on-Sea, and in 2020 the project expanded to include bathing waters across West Somerset: Minehead, Dunster, Porlock and Blue Anchor.
During the project timeframe, the LFCSS team helped establish beach cleaning groups in Burnham-on-Sea and Berrow, and provided support to a number of existing groups across Somerset. The team also worked with partner organisations to install beach toy libraries, #2minutelitterpick boards and angling line recycling bins around the Somerset Coast, all aiming to reduce litter.
The project also had a range of campaigns aiming to protect bathing water quality, including successful dog fouling campaigns and the launch of the Somerset Poo Fighters group. In partnership with Somerset Wildlife Trust and Carymoor Environmental Trust, LFCSS coordinated the Somerset School Coastal Champions Award, an initiative encouraging primary schools to take action for their local coastlines.
Although the project ended in March 2025, many resources from the project are still available for use. This includes the self-led Coastal Champions resources aimed at schools, youth groups and home school networks.
Charlie Green, SEP Placement Student, has completed an evaluation of the project over the past 5 years, including a video showcasing some of the successes of the project. Watch it on YouTube using the link below:
